Things to do and see

Get amongst nature

October-November is Jacaranda Season in Brisbane, when the trees come alive with purple blossoms. Take a stroll to the City Botanic Gardens to see them in their glory, or hop on a CityCat or bus to New Farm Park. You can also head a bit further afield to the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, or the lakes around The University of Queensland.

Cuddle a koala or feed a kangaroo

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is just a short boat ride or drive from the Brisbane CBD. It’s the world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary. While there you might have the chance to feed a kangaroo or wallaby, meet the resident quokka, or even cuddle a koala!

Tap into the culture

Head across the river to the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art. It features incredible permanent and visiting exhibitions all year round. In the same precinct you’ll find the Queensland Museum (fun if you like dinosaurs!) and the State Library of Queensland, both of which often host tours and exhibitions.

Get a birds-eye view of the City

A short stroll up William Street along the river will take you to The Star Casino and Hotel. Take the elevator - for free - up to the skydeck to get an almost-360-degree-view of Brisbane, and then enjoy a cocktail or meal at one of the many restaurants.

Get adventurous

The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is a fun way to get a unique perspective on the City. If you’re after something closer to the ground, take a walk along the river through Southbank, over one of the many bridges to the river walk.

FAQs for Delegates

  • From the Brisbane Airport, you can:

    • Take the train to Central Station, and walk about 10 minutes (about 29 minutes)

    • Grab a taxi or Uber (about 15 minutes)

    Find more options here: https://www.bne.com.au/passenger/to-and-from/transport-options

  • Public transport in Brisbane is just 50 cents a ride, no matter where you’re going, so it’s always a good option. Trains, busses, and CityCats / ferries are very popular.

Most public transport is now fitted with ‘tap and go’ technology, so all you have to do is tap your credit card to pay.

Taxis and Uber / rideshare are also readily available.

  • Not yet! But watch this space…

  • The venue for our conference is the Pullman Hotel. Alongside the Mercure Hotel, you can get discounted room rates here (see the information above).

    Other accommodation includes:

There are also options available through AirBNB.

If you’d like a nice stroll across the river in the mornings, you can also check out the hotels available at Southbank.

  • Overall, Brisbane is a very safe city to walk around. Like anywhere else though, be vigilant, stay to well-lit streets, and look out for each other.

  • The weather in Brisbane in October is typically very pleasant - warm days and cooler nights. Dress smart casual, and bring a jacket / jumper to wear for the cooler hours.

  • Close to the conference venue is the Queen Street Mall and Brisbane CBD, where there is a range of food and shopping available.

Other popular spots that are easy to get to include:

    • Fortitude Valley - home to Brisbane’s China Town precinct, as well as several laneways stacked with restaurants and bars

    • West End - across the river, it’s a vibrant community filled with great eateries and bars

    • Southbank - a favourite for a walk, swim, run and a meal

    • Howard Smith Wharves - situated under the iconic Story Bridge, there are several options available here

    • EatStreet - a little further afield in Hamilton is the EatStreet precinct, filled with hundreds of food vendors. Only open selected days.

It always pays to check ahead to make sure venues are open. In Brisbane, many places are closed on Mondays.

  • No, all sessions will be presented live only.

  • Where we have permission from speakers, slide decks and other materials will be shared for a limited time after the conference.
